Assessments

Ryley offers a range of comprehensive assessment services including full psycho-educational assessments with practical recommendations for cognitive, academic, social-emotional, and adaptive behavioral concerns. Ryley utilizes a thematic report writing style so that the results of your assessment are clear and easily understood by parents, teachers, and other professionals working with your child.

A psycho-educational assessment may be appropriate if you suspect that your child has a learning disability, intellectual disability, developmental disability, or other social-emotional and behavioral needs.

Ryley understands that seeking an assessment can be a significant investment for families therefore, she offers a free initial consultation to determine whether an assessment is required to support you in understanding and meeting your child’s needs.

Counselling

Ryley provides counselling intervention to children and youth (up to the age of 24). Ryley’s philosophy when providing counselling support is to meet each client’s needs as effectively as possible. The emphasis is on listening to what they want to achieve, working collaboratively with them to create an action plan, and supporting/motivating them along their path to change. Ryley primarily utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which is an evidenced based counselling intervention for children, youth, and adults with an array of presenting mental health concerns or challenges. This is a structured and goal oriented therapy, which is based on the belief that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interact, and that by making small changes in any one of these areas, we are able to influence the entire system. Through the counselling process, the aim is to teach clients and, in cases where the client is a minor, their parents to identify and respond to dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs, manage emotions in positive and healthy ways, and overcome anxious, worried, or negative thoughts. As part of her practice Ryley often assigns homework to be completed in between sessions with the aim of helping clients to achieve the goals they have set for therapy. Although a lot of work is completed in sessions, the real benefits of accessing counselling are often achieved in the work done outside of sessions. She also incorporates aspects of other evidence based counselling interventions into her practice including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and play based therapy strategies.

Furthermore, when working with children and teens, Ryley believes that parent involvement and collaboration is an integral part of providing effective counselling intervention. As such, parents are generally involved directly in the treatment with their child and are made aware of the techniques they can utilize to better support their child in difficult times and situations. Ryley works with any other members of your child’s team to set up a plan that maximizes your child’s success.

Making the decision to initiate counselling can be a scary and overwhelming experience. Finding the right fit with your psychologist is critical, and Ryley understands that. She always meets with new clients for a free initial phone consultation to answer any of your questions, hear a bit about what you would like from counselling, and share a bit about her approach with you.
